King of Swords

King of Swords

Mictlantecutli

Astrological Association: Libra (Active)

Description of the Illustration: Mictlantecutli, the Aztec god of death and the underworld, flies through the skies on the back of a gargantuan bat in horrific abandon, celebrating the night when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. From one hand springs a large tornado of spiders, skeletons, tombs, jack-o-lanterns, and autumn leaves, while his other hand grasps a great and terrible sword that drips blood. In the distance, Mexican families gather around candlelit adorned gravesites in a cemetery during Dias de Muertos to honor their deceased loved ones and the Lord of Death himself.
