Description of the Illustration: The Crone stands at the crossroads before a large cauldron; she uses one had to stir the churning waters with a frightening sword, while with the other she pulls aside the thin veil that separates this world from the afterlife to gaze directly at us; her formidable stare seems to pierce right through us, deftly judging our worth. Simultaneously, she cries great tears that fall into her cauldron; within the cauldron’s murky depths we can just make out the distant image of her lost beloved, the Lord of the Shadows. Small spirits of the deceased are returning to her cauldron to reincarnate. Above her a pack of hounds bay at the waning moon that is partially covered by clouds.
