Six of Swords

Six of Swords

Fresh Horizons

Astrological Association: Mercury in Aquarius

Description of the Illustration: According to the traditions of the Mexican culture, October 31st is the only day that Death doesn’t work. On this card, we have the Lord of Death, Mictlantecutli, taking a vacation as a great owl ferries him across the immense river that is a spirit’s first obstacle to enter the underworld. Six swords stand up from the boat, each one pierced through jack-o-lanterns, sculls, cempasuchil (yellow marigolds — the flower of death in Mexico), and the planet Mercury. The ghost of the mermaid from the Star card (the water-bearer) can be seen in the distance, the water from her two ghostly pitchers defying gravity as they pour upwards. A golden sphere (Tiphereth) peeks over the bottom center edge of the card.
