The Empress

III - The Empress...

The Lover

Description of the Illustration:

A demure, enchanting Geisha glances over her shoulder at us with a come-hither look in her eyes. She stands outside in a lush Japanese garden, surrounded by the artful blending of natural beauty with refined symmetry. On either side of her we find the tantalizing images of female fertility. Down the back of her cherry-blossomed kimono are sprinkled seven butterflies, and emblazoned upon her fan is the image of the planet Venus. The upper left sphere is green (Netzach) while the lower right sphere is divided into four equal colors of russet, navy, citrine, and olive (Malkuth).

Astrological Association: Venus

Element: Earth, Feminine

Mother

The first being encountered by the Fool on his Earth-bound journey is his Mother, the Empress. It is she who nurtures him, who introduces him to both sensation and sustenance, who offers pleasure and sanctuary.

For the rest of the Fool’s lifetime, he will base his concept of “woman” and “security” upon this primary relationship; the Fool has now been imprinted with the concept of that which is good for him, and that which is not.

The Empress is also Mother Nature (or Mother Earth), and based upon the Fool’s initial positive and negative experiences within the world of the five senses, he will decide what sort of place this world is. Ideally, the Empress offers the Fool the love and devotion that he may use to regenerate the Kingdom, while transmitting the understanding of the Great Mother (Binah).

This pivotal relationship can teach the Fool the Path of Unity, the experience of losing the Ego and being absorbed into the Absolute. At her best, the Empress is the True Woman who guides the Fool to discover the Divine Feminine. However, often the Fool’s experience with the Empress is less than idyllic, and he is programmed to fear lack and loneliness while learning insecurity and distrust.
