The Hermit

VIX - The Hermit...

The Virgin

Description of the Illustration:

A solitary accountant, meticulously laboring at his numbers and books with a wrinkled brow, sits at his small desk in a cramped and darkened room; he is completely unaware of the bright window behind him through which paradise awaits. On his desk are two paperweights on top of stacks and stacks of more work: the first is the planet Mercury and the second is a statue of a beautiful Virgin holding a stalk of grain. (Please note that the word virgin means "intact". A "virgin" in ancient times was a priestess to the goddess of the harvest, Demeter, in the Mediterranean temples during the golden age of Rome. She was complete in and of herself and beholden to no man for her livelihood.) The Hermit, however, shows us what happens when the Virgin gains too much dominance in our lives. The upper left sphere is red (Geburah) while the lower right sphere is orange (Hod).

Astrological Association: Virgo

Element: Earth, Feminine, Receptive, Mutable sign

Isolation

Once satiated, the Fool realizes that the sensual world offers little attraction. He finds himself asking difficult questions: Why is there something rather than nothing? Why does it seem as though something is missing in life? Why is there pain and suffering?

The Fool meets the Hermit, who assists the Fool as he searches for these critical answers, considering all the details, leaving no stone unturned in his quest for understanding. The Hermit encourages the Fool to look inwards and seek solitude; the Fool finds himself seeking the alternate path of Severity, that of the Ascetic and the Abstinent.

Through the Hermit he learns to temper his excesses and control his impulses. Our Fool realizes there is much, much more than Ego, but does not yet comprehend the grander design.
